Amongst a swarm of people painting these days, and marketed as artists, few have prevailed with such high quality for so long.
Robert’s first painting was completed in 1985. Not surprisingly, it was a seascape. Showing immediately as possessing artistic promise, Robert set forth on a committed learning agenda. He studied the great artists, particularly JMW Turner, due to the paucity of technical skills evident even in Australia’s most well known painters’ work.
Central to Robert’s studies and exploration was – and remains – the understanding of the physical qualities of paint:
In other words, what paint can do. What oil paint is capable of achieving.
As a consequence, Robert’s technical skill is unequaled in the world of art. He readily accepts there are artists who could and do create more sophisticated paintings, none has studied the techniques of oil painting to the extent he has. This knowledge is available in online art courses.
